Congressional Action

In the first blog post I wrote I brought up recommendations given to the NCAA in order to make the tournaments much more equal but only some of the recommendations were actually implemented. We got an equal amount of gifts and the same branding for the tournament but it's the actual operations of the tournament that have failed to change and congress has taken notice. A bill is being introduced that would create a 16 member congressional commission to investigate gender equity within the NCAA's operations. They are planning on the commission having a final report in 12 to 18 months along with policy recommendations again. One thing that I'm confused about is why this wasn't passed sooner and why it's just more recommendations being made. Obviously, the NCAA doesn't do great with recommendations as we've seen. Why should this time be any different? Additionally, if this bill was passed when this all happened last year then the report would be done or close to done by now. Currently, the NCAA won't even have the report by the next NCAA tournament so women are going to have to go another year with a tournament that is operated in a completely different manner than the men's. Everything just seems to be moving so slowly for the amount of change that all these people are promising.
